Hello,
I am seeking information on Dr. Robert Hurt (1823-1917) who supposedly was one of the pastor's of Mayo Memorial Methodist Church in Paintsville, Johnson County, Kentucky. He was a physician as well as ordained minister and attended Emory & Henry College in Russell County, Virginia before re-locating his family to Kentucky. He was married to Esther M. Leslie of Kentucky. I know nothing of her family or his parents. Dr. & Mrs. Hurt had four daughters and one son. Their daughter, Ida Ella Hurt (1866-1950) was the second wife of my Great-grandfather Calvin Thomas Long.
I believe she is buried in the Mayo Memorial Cemetery there at Paintsville, KY. Is this near the church?
Gratefully,
Mrs. Judy Kenaston Warren

My grandfather was Clifford Franklin Pace.  He as a lawyer in Paintsville.  I think he died around 1942.  My father was Martin Allen Pace.  He is deceased.  He was an only child.  I don't know the location of any Pace relatives and would like to know something about the Pace family.  Clifford Franklin had a brother named John Wallace Pace and a sister named Versie.  Versie married a man named N. L. Cecil.  Versie, her husband, and John Wallace moved to Monitor, Washington and were owners of orchards in the Wenatchee valley.  Does anyone know anthing about the Pace family history?

Thanks, Rhonda

Bob (Buddy):  Was surfing the web for information on relatives in Johnson County and visited your website.  Very Interesting. Lorraine, Mary McClaffery, and Alphie would be proud!! Am wondering if you remember doing article about the "City Market" a few years back. My Mother, Estalena Borders Blair passed away February 20th and we had her funeral at Southside Church on the 24th.  If you remember, she and my Aunt Mavis Patrick ran the store for about 25years.  Also, there was an article in Paintsville Herald about the Tops In Our Town contest, which Mother won and got a trip to New York City. The contest was sponsored by Betty Crocker, and Mother and Daddy got to visit with her in New York.

Don't know the exact date, but must have been in the forties,46,47,48 possibly. What I remember seeing may have been a reprint you did when you were at the Herald. Anyway, if you recall anything, Let me know. It would be good to sit down and talk over old times. Seems as if "old times"become more important as the years go by.

Sincerely,

Barbara Sue (Williams)Pfaff

A new book of interest to Johnson and Lawrence Counties residents has been published recently…
"FRIED POTATOES, MUSTARD GREENS, FAT BACK, SOUP BEANS AND CORNBREAD…Retracing the Vanishing Footprints of Our Appalachian Ancestors" represents a genealogical history of thirteen major pioneer families who settled in eastern Kentucky during the 18th and 19th Centuries. The surnames include Adams, Berry, Brooks, Brown, Burton, Castle, Chaffin, Daniel(s), Large, Thompson, Ward, Wellman, and Young. To fully appreciate their social and economic hardships and challenges requires the reader to visualize what life was like on the early frontier. After the American Revolution and the Civil War, many of these early pioneers traveled from North Carolina and Virginia into the sheltering hills of eastern Kentucky via Cumberland Gap and Pound Gap. Others came from Pennsylvania. They settled in early Floyd and Lawrence Counties, which were later divided into present day Boyd, Elliott, Floyd, Johnson, Lawrence, and Martin Counties. They were mostly of English, Irish, Scotch-Irish or Anglo-Saxon extraction and made their living by farming the hilly terrain or working in the coalmines. Some supplemented their income by trapping and hunting. They may have been poor by economic standards, but they remained a proud and independent people with strong character traits. Many of their descendants have gone on to become physicians, lawyers, teachers, scientists, military leaders and public servants.

The ISBN number is: 1-4140-3065-7. The book may be purchased from the publisher at www.1stbooks.com for $29.75 + S & H, www.Borders.com for $37.95 + S & H; Words ‘n Stuff in Van Lear, or via phone at: 1-800-214-8257 for $34.95 + S & H, or an autographed copy from the Author for $25.00 + S & H at kc8aos@msn.com

I just found your site where a message was posted back in 2000 from
Carolyn Gindhart referencing Doc Rice.  My Mom (Josephine Stone Caudill) and
my Dad (Ermal Saylor) both grew up around Oil Springs and Salyersville.
> My Mom & I just returned from a trip down there so we could try to find
any living relatives and visit the cemetaries (not an easy task sometimes).
>
> The cemetary where my Dad's relatives are buried is WAY up a hill behind
the Rice's house.  There are Rice's buried there, too.  The Rice who lives
in the house (I think his name was Willie) I believe told us that Doc Rice
was his Grandpa.  I remember my Mom talking about Doc Rice, too.  And he
said that we are related way back about 6 generations.  But I pretty much
think most everyone down there is related if you go back far enough.
>
> I don't know if Willie Rice is listed in the phone book, but my cousin
Melvina (Saylor) Tackett knows him. so if you need a number, I could ask
her.  Linda Cochran   Harrah, OK

Hi, I recently started reserching my Ratliff family from Johnson County, KY.  I have found a great deal of information and connected alot of the family together.

I'm the g-g-g-great grand daughter of Silas Ratliff & Anne Spradlin, the g-g-great grand daughter of James Ratliff & Rebecca Blanton,

the g-great grand daughter of William Henry "Bud" Ratliff & Louticia Blanton Collins,

the great grand daughter of Edward (Ed) Ratliff & Tallie Ratliff,

the grand daughter of Bert Ratliff & Manie Murry.

Does anyone have any knowledge or pictures of anyone in this Ratliff family line?

Also, is anyone familiar with William Harlan Murry & Ettie Bell Jones, the parents of Manie Murry (b:June 11, 1904 KY - d: June , 1995 MI)?  As far as I understand it, they were from Blaine, Ky (Lawrence County).  I have very little knowledge of my grand mother.  I haven't had any luck in finding info on her or her parents.  She had an older sister Leota or Leoda.

Bert and Manie are buried at Bellefonte Memorial Gardens Cemetery, in Flatwooods, Ky (Greenup County).  Anyone with any help please email me.  Thanks!

God bless,

Rhonda
