Mr. Marsh:

I recently finished your book, "And That's A Fact" This book is very informative and enjoyable to read. It brings back some memories as I used to live on Lick Fork across from the Lick Fork School. Patrick Blair was my grandfather, and we moved into his house after he died in 1953. Patrick's Son Russell Blair was my father. I have a question you may or may not be able to answer, but in the book you mention The Attorney Frank P. Blair Paintsville City Attorney--1928 & as Johnson Circuit Court Clerk 1910. Do you by any chance know the Parents of Frank P. Blair????

I just found your sight and think I might be interested in purchasing a book..  But before I do, I would like to ask you some questions about it.
I have been researching for my Morgan Davis and also for his son John Davis who married Lizze or Betty Yates somewhere between 1870-1872, they were in Lawrence Co. Ky after the war, then in 1870's from 1874 to 1880 I find them in Johnson Co., KY.  Was there something going on that would be in your book after 1880.  I loose track of them and have wondered if they may have moved somewhere else

any clue where I might find his parents names and origin...Children by
Nancy Brammer are: Stewart, Wm Riley, Lucy, Elizabeth, Mary, Richard Nancy, Silas
Granville, James Berry. I received an e-mail from a Spangler that his
name may be spelled Jehoida, and he shows NC, lived in Wayne Co KY in

Hello,

I am in great need of help and was wondering if you could help me.
Hopefully you can. I went to a family reunion just a couple of days ago. It was held in Stambough Kentucky, that is not my question. My question is DO YOU KNOW ANY INFORMATION ABOUT JENNY C. WILEY? This is real important. I found out that she is my great aunt. I would like to know more about her. All I know about her is that she was captured by Indians and held captive for a while and that she had five Indian children. Let me make a list of what I would like to know. If you can and or have information will you send it to me. If you don't I guess I will keep on looking.
 * Where exactly did she live?
 * How many children (in all) did she have?
 * What kind of Indian was she captured by?
 * What was her husbands name?
 * Did she have any children with her husband?
 * Did she have any children with any of the Indians that she was captured by?
 * Is her cabin still in place, where she united with her husband?
 * If so how far off from her grave site is it?
 * Was there any reason to why she was captured?
 * When exactly did she escape?

Sorry if this is too much to read and or handle. But please if you will help me. Also if you don't have any info is there a place that I can contact to find out?

 Thank you,

Interesting site and article and was wondering if you have more information on this robbery or know where I might read more on it.
According to family members, the bank robbers was at a spot on old US23 known as Banner May Curve when they happened upon a man and his horse.  The man was Walter Wallen and the horse was named Jude.  When the robbers came around the corner they slammed into Walter and his horse.  The horse was shot and killed due to its injuries and Walter crushed a leg and was taken to hospital in Martin, where he later died of gangrene.
Do you have any knowledge of these details or reading this.  Would like to know more and much thanks for your site.

My great-grandfather, Lewis McCurry, lived in Johnson County between 1880 and 1920.  According to a brief article in the Ashland Independent dated August 9, 1883, Lewis McCurry killed a deputy sheriff Caudill of Floyd County.  I believe that Lewis may have served as a deputy sheriff in Johnson County during the time he lived there.  I would be most interested in any information about Lewis McCurry and his family.  Your site is a great resource for Johnson County researchers.

Its strange how things seem to turn out. Just yesterday, I was trying to remember the exact date that LBJ visited Paintsville and in today's mail is a clipping from last Wednesday's Paintsville Herald containing that date. My aunt sends me things she thinks I might be interested in. I was 14 at the time and remember the excitement when the word got out. My dad, Charles A. Daniels was a member of the Civil Defense at the time and I remember looking for him as men were stationed all over town. I have a photo of one on the courthouse roof and I recall one was even in Mayo Methodist Church's bell tower. You mentioned in the article that "As many as seven identical new Mercury sedans carried the presidential party.." I'm not very good at making out old cars, but the series of photos that I have show the presidential limousine followed by a convertible that he and Mrs.Johnson got into just after crossing over the Paint Creek Bridge and beside First National Bank. I don't recognize the dignitaries with them, but I think Gov. Breathitt was between the Johnsons. Behind the convertible was a light colored sedan, this is the one John Mark was driving and behind that was another light colored sedan that my dad was driving. As I mentioned I hadn't been successful in finding him until after they arrive at the court house and I asked him what he was doing and he said waiting for the president to finish speaking. I have a photo of him beside his vehicle. I wish I had been a better photographer. My best two photos are just after they got into the convertible and I managed to get into the line along the walk from Second St. to the front of the court house and got one from about four feet. He shook hands with those on either side of me and skipped me. I'm not sure if it was because I was a kid or he could tell I'm Republican. Ha ha. In case you haven't made the connection, my folks Charles and Maude "Mac" Daniels were in partnership with John and Janet, along with Melvin and Betty Powers in the Family Store in Paintsville and Prestonsburg and the Tiger Drive in when it was in the bus across from the grade school. I guess the last time I saw either John or Janet was at my dad's funeral in 1987. Tell them hello for me. And thanks for the article. It was right on time. Mike Daniels Winchester, KY

.PS On you site you mentioned some of the people from WSIP. I'd be interested in knowing what ever happened to Ted Silvert. I think he went to Florida. Before the present building was built for the station, he and his family lived two doors from us. He had two kids David and Susan. His wife was Anna Ruth

Just thought you might like some added information about my wife's great-great uncle, Dr. W.R. Castle. His name was WILLIAM ROGER CASTLE, born 17 Jan 1882 and died 29 Nov 1947. He graduated from the Hospital College of Medicine in Louisville, KY on 30 Jul 1907 (vice 1908). He is buried in theCastle Cemetary, Nippa, KY, across the road from the W.R. Castle Elementary School. An amusing story is told in the family. My wife's grandfather, FRANK BAILEY CASTLE was asked by Doc to accompany him one night to help him deliver a child. It was Oct 31st and by time they started home, Doc told Frank "Well, it's Halloween Night and we ain't done nothing yet." So they proceeded to tip over an outhouse as a prank. The only problem was there was someone inside! Thanks for the great history site for those of us who haven't lived in Johnson County. You just don't know how this kind of information helps those of us on the "outside"! Thanks! Gary Altman and Helen Castle Altman

I had someone e-mail your NEW web page about the so-called "Fyffe Brothers' Feud". What prompted you to add it at this time? What other documentation backs up the so-called eye-witness account of someone who was a child at the time? My grandfather was Henry Fyffe. I felt some of the statements made about him and my family was hurtful, if not malicious. You may consider it "Folklore" for some to "enjoy", but a tragedy is nothing to glorify even if it happened 68 years ago. I am not denying that a terrible event occured, but should it be presented in this manner?

Hi,
I have really enjoyed reading the material here about Paintsville,
Kentucky and would be very interested in getting a copy of your book. How do I go about this? Cost and shipping?
I was especially interested in reading about Uncle Bud Stafford
(1838-1924) who owned the land south of Paint River to Burnt Cabin. That rang a bell with me as my Great-grandfather Calvin Thomas Long (1856-1935) owned Burnt Cabin from about 1881 to 1886. I was told that it got it's name when it was partially burned during the War Between the States. Supposedly my Great-grandfather Long purchased the land about 1881 and restored the cabin where they lived for about six years. If anyone has any further information on the area I would be most interested in corresponding with you. It is my understanding that Old Burnt cabin was destroyed in the 1970s due to a new highway going through that area. We will be visiting Paintsville, Kentucky October 17th-18th and I would like to talk to anyone who can give me any history on the Long or VanHoose families. My Great-grandmother was LucindaVanHoose (1855-1919), Great-granddaughter of Col. John VanHoose 1760-1860)and his wife Mary Bryan (1769-1847). Is there information on him in yourbook?
Gratefully yours,

Mr. Marsh,

I am currently trying to research the Hall side of my family tree.... My
Hall's lived in Virginia and there was a book published in about 1976 by
Larry King that listed some of the history saying that it had been taken from a
book by C. Mitchel Hall and from help from the Hall family that was in
Grayson County, VA.... I was wanting to get a copy of the book Mr. King
wrote Blue Ridge Mountain Kinfolks. I have been unable to get any
information so that I could do that and was wondering if you knew how I
could perhaps get a copy of C. Mitchel Hall's book or books. I am extremely
interested in any help you could offer.

Thank you

As a descendant of Johnson County residents, John Calhoun Ward and Hazel
Meek, I want to thank you for all the information you share with others!  I
enjoy seeing the new chronological events listed.  Also notice in the
Paintsville Herald online, that you are going to submit an article about
early educators.  My grandfather, John Calhoun Ward, was a long time
educator teaching mainly along Greasy Creek etc. My Uncle, Felix Ward, also
taught school in the county.  I wonder if you would include them in your
article?  Billie Edyth Ward knew of my grandfather and might be able to
supply information.  Thanks!

Trying to find info on Edward King who moved to Mud Lick area of Johnson County in mid 1860's. Specifically, I would like to know when he died, when his wife died, when they were married, where they were married, where he was born, where she was born, her maiden name, their parents...etc.

I have info from census of Russell County Va. in 1850 and 1860...Lebanon Township... but a lot of other unanswered questions. He was the grandfather of my grandfather, Jim King of Van Lear.

I have all his children's names and some of their wives' names from various books such as Charles Wells' book, plus several sites on the internet.
Any help will be deeply appreciated and all info I have will be gladly shared.
This is a great site, Bob. Keep up the good work!

Hello,
My name is Angela (Hensley) Craft. Just wanted to tell you that I love your website. It is very informative and I especially enjoy reading the messages from your readers. I'm the oldest daugther of Harry Thomas Hensley. My grandparents were Ted and Willa Ruth Hensley. They were born and raised at Southside in Paintsville and were the proud parents of 12 children.   My grandfather worked for the sheriff's department, as well as, worked as a stone mason and helped erect the now infamous "2 Mile Marker" which commemerates Jenny Wiley's Crossing. Though both of my grandparents have now passed on, the heritage and legacy of the times on the "mountain" will always live on with me. As a child, I can remember listening for hours on end as my grandparents spun the yarns of the "old times".  Especially, the
story of the "Harry Man"....!!  Boy, that was scary at the time! But I loved every second of it!  If only I could remember everything...if only I could have been old enough to write it the stories down. What a book that would have been!
                                                                                    Thankyou,

Mr. Marsh
I am interested in any information you might have on a plane crash that took place in Van Lear, Ky particularly Butcher Hollow.  I have talked to a few people who recall seeing the crash or the aftermath.  This took place around 1947 or 48, from what I understand the pilot was found hanging from a tree in Daniels Creek.  This was a military plane and it was armed.  I was told it was shot down it that area due to dense population.  The plane was going to crash and therefore it was shot down by our military to prevent it crashing in a more populated area. If you have any information I would appreciate it.
Sincerely

Mr. Marsh:
I have enjoyed several of your "and that's A Fact!" issues. My grandfather, Judge James Franklin (J.F.) Bailey died on June 7, 1959 at the age of 87 and is buried in the Lexington Cemetery with my father, Wallis Marion Bailey, also of Johnson County. While I know a great deal of my mother's (nee Gladys Rice) side of the family (Sherman Rice), I know very little on the Bailey side. As I am sure you know, Judge Bailey moved to Lexington and purchased the "Loudon House" during the 1920's and then resold to the City of Lexington, and is now known as Castlewood Park.
If you could lead me in the right direction for any additional information regarding my grandfather, it would be appreciated.
Sincerely,

First of all, I just want to say that you truly have a wonderful website.  My question is, can anyone tell me when and where did the name "Vanhoose Holler" come from?  I was told that it came from my 2nd great grandfather Benjamin Franklin Vanhoose.  Is this true?

Thank You,
(Vanhoose Research)

Dear Mr Marsh,

I just want to thank you for such a wonderful,
well presented website on the history of Johnson
CO and Paintsville. It was most helpful. I had
to do a project concerning the history of my
home and my place in it. Although, Im still
unaware of my place in this community, im sure
ill find out soon enough. Your website really
helped me out alot, and I just wanted to thank
you for taking an interest in my home. I learned
alot of neat stuff, that I didn't know.
Especially about my church (Mayo Meth.) I found
it all to be very captivating.

 Thanks a bunch,
 TIffany Spencer

I enjoy your website immensely and hoping I may be able to get some
assistance from you or your readers.  I am the great granddaughter of
the late Sam and Sarah Fairchild Blanton of Paintsville. In the late
1920s they moved into a home on South Euclid Ave.  Sam died in 1948, but
Sarah remained there until shortly before her death in 1968.  Following
her death the home was sold and later I believe there was a pharmacy
built on the site.  To the best of my recollection there was a grocery,
or some other business across the street from the home.  It was a two
story frame home which had a porch that I believe extended across the
entire front of the home.  In the 1930s and 40s this was also a boarding
house.  I am searching for a picture of this home.  If anyone has one, I
would greatly appreciate you contacting me at: winkatbunkhouse@webtv.net
or dianne6679@yahoo.com.   Sincerely, Dianne Bayes Smiley, Camden, Ohio

I need your help! My grandfather was killed in a fight around May 30 1939. His name is Everett Hensley. His last known residence is in White House, Kentucky.  My father was born after the murder so he has never seen him or heard many stories. I guess my grandmother ripped up the pictures and didn't want to talk about him because she told him not to fight or something like that. Basically I am looking for any pictures, stories, or general information about him. Monroe Spradlin was the man who killed him. Monroe was sent to prison for the crime. Please Help!!!!!!!!

I was born in Paintsville, Ky.  My brothers and sisters and I attended the school when it first opened.  I believe it opened in 1946?  I was only 6 years old and the 6th child in line out of 10.  We always visit the school on our visits.  Paintsville, Ky is the most beautiful town I know.  My grandparents were Samuel (good) and Matilda Vanhoose Stapleton.  You have a wonderful site.  thanks.  Alice

My grandfather was Clifford Franklin Pace.  He as a lawyer in Paintsville.  I think he died around 1942.  My father was Martin Allen Pace.  He is deceased.  He was an only child.  I don't know the location of any Pace relatives and would like to know something about the Pace family.  Clifford Franklin had a brother named John Wallace Pace and a sister named Versie.  Versie married a man named N. L. Cecil.  Versie, her husband, and John Wallace moved to Monitor, Washington and were owners of orchards in the Wenatchee valley.  Does anyone know anthing about the Pace family history?

Thanks,

Rhonda
