Does anyone have any information about Allen and Sarah Penix who
lived near the mouth of Tom's Creek in 1850? In 1880, they both
lived in the household of Marcum Castle who was married to their
daughter, Catherine. Allen was blind and it has been said that he
was a broom maker. Also, many people have come to the conclusion
that he was adopted, therefore he had a different birth name than "Penix".
If anyone can give me more information or knows someone who might
please contact me at:
poetcow66@yahoo.com. Thanks! Sandy

Mr.
Marsh,
My
name is Scott McKenzie and my family roots take me to Johnson
County, Kentucky.
I
have spent the past 18 months working on a family history and I am
ready to visit the Paintsville and Flat Gap area. I will be
bringing my mother and father with me in mid-May and I wanted to ask
if you had any suggestions as to resources that I should take
advantage of while visiting to better understand and examine my
family connection to Johnson County.
I
have already spoken to Gail McKenzie Spradlin from the County
Library and Riva McKenzie Rose from the Mountain Home Place and plan
to meet with them during our visit. I would appreciate any
suggestions that you may have.
I am a grandson of T.C. (Tollie Clayton) Meade 1908 - 1990 & Eva
Meade 1906 - 1993. Tollie was founder and owner of Meade & Co. He
sold furniture & hardware in a few stores throughout Johnson Co.
from 1941 - 1967. Tollie's main store was next door to his
residence at 415 Main Street in downtown Paintsville.
I am interested in obtaining memorabilia & photographs of Meade &
Co. I am also curious to know if the Meade's former house still
exists at 415 Main Street. If so, I am interested in obtaining
current photographs & photographs of present day Main Street. Any
assistance you are willing to provide is greatly appreciated.
I am the grand daughter of Lon and Lucy (Caudill) VanHoose.
They had 7 Children Proctor, Leila, Oakel, Ezra, Erma, Carmel
and Earlene VanHoose. My mother, Earlene died in 2003.
I have been doing research on the family and would like to have
pictures if anybody has some to share with me. I was 9 months
old when I saw my grandmother. She was sick and died Sept. 19,
1958.. Grandpa died before she did. I know Uncle Oakel has a
son named Jack born Jan. 15, 1930 Bobby born January 5, 1932
and 3 daughters: Jewell born Jan.25, 1929 Joyce born January 18,
1935, Mary VanHoose born June 28, 1944. I was raised by my Aunt
on my father's side and never knew any of my mom's family. I
would really appreciate any help you can give me. My father is
George H. Lampkin. They lived in Ohio for a while then moved to
Indiana.

I am trying to retrace the route that my family followed every
year through 1955 in traveling from Charleston, West Virginia to
Hindman, Kentucky. I distinctly remember driving to Huntington
and crossing into Kentucky on a truss bridge that had metal
gratings for a floor. I distinctly remember the noise that the
tires made on the metal grating. I recently visited Huntington
and Fort Gay, West Virginia, but was unable to find the bridge.
I assume that that bridge is long gone. Do you know where it
was located?
